Building a simple, effective skincare routine

Cleanser, moisturiser, SPF: why the basics beat a ten-step shelf.

TL;DR

A gentle cleanser, a ceramide moisturiser and a daily SPF do most of the work for most skin. Add actives like retinol slowly, one at a time, and always wear sunscreen.

The most effective routine is usually the one you will actually follow. For most skin, three steps do the heavy lifting: a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser with ceramides to support the skin barrier, and a daily broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher.

Once that base is consistent, you can add an active. Retinol is a good first choice for texture and fine lines, but introduce it slowly, a few nights a week, and pair it with moisturiser. Add only one new product at a time so you can tell what is helping and what is irritating.

Whatever actives you use, sunscreen every morning is the rule that ties it together, especially with retinol or acids, which make skin more sensitive to the sun. A short routine done daily will outperform a long one you abandon.
