What roast level actually means

TL;DR

  • Roast level trades origin character for roast character.
  • Light = bright, fruity, aromatic. Dark = bold, chocolatey, low-acidity.
  • There's no 'best' - only what suits your taste and brew.
Full read

Roast level is the single biggest lever on how your coffee tastes. It's a spectrum from light to dark, and where a bean lands changes everything from acidity to body.

Light roasts

Stopped shortly after first crack, light roasts preserve the bean's origin character: bright acidity, floral aromatics and fruit-forward sweetness. They shine as filter and pour-over.

Medium roasts

The classic balance - rounded body, gentle acidity, notes of caramel and cocoa. The most versatile choice across brew methods.

Dark roasts

Taken into second crack, dark roasts are bold and comforting: low acidity, full body, deep chocolate and dark-sugar notes. Built for espresso and milk drinks.

There is no 'best' roast - only the one that suits your palate and how you brew.
